MAKE-&-TAKE WORKSHOP
|
We are so glad to have organized the recent "Make-&-Take" Workshop in Oklahoma City and equipped 20+ educators with ten ready-to-go activities covering functional skills from:
|
ACTIVITY 2: CALENDAR TIME & COMMUNICATIONS BOARDEducational Purpose: This activity provides the opportunity for all students to demonstrate their knowledge during a group lesson (such as morning meeting/calendar time, etc.) where the days of the week, months of the year, counting, shapes, and colors are being taught/reviewed.
|
ACTIVITY 4: "THINGS I LIKE" BOOKEducational Purpose: This activity provides differentiation for students in the area of writing. The student can complete the sentence with the appropriate word.
The student can use a dry erase marker to write the answer, select the word, select the word with the symbol, or select the symbol only; in order to complete their written sentence. |
ACTIVITY 6: INITIAL SOUNDSEducational Purpose: Hearing the initial sound in words is one aspect of sound discrimination, and is an important phonemic awareness skill.
It enables the students to become aware of the sounds they hear, along with assisting them in learning letter sounds as they become more fluent readers. |
ACTIVITY 7: SKIP COUNTINGEducational Purpose: Skip counting is more than just a quick way to count equal groups or a strategy for learning multiplication.
Being able to quickly and fluently skip count is an important part of building number sense. This enables the students to see patterns with numbers. |
ACTIVITY 8: WORD FAMILY BOOKEducational Purpose: The purpose of this activity is to introduce word families. Discuss how the meaning changes when we change the initial consonant of a word family word.
We have four different word families: “an”, “at”, “ock”, and “ug”. There are 5 words that can be created in all four-word family books. |
ACTIVITY 9: TRACING MAT & WRITING PROMPTEducational Purpose: The tracing pages allows the students to practice fine motor skills in order to assist in developing meaningful marks on papers. This will shape into more advanced writing abilities.
The writing prompt allows the students to work on composition of writing by utilizing any of the four writing prompts and answering the starter prompts on the page. |
ACTIVITY 10: TASK BOXEducational Purpose: Organizing a room for multiple students on multiple levels can be an overwhelming task for teachers. The task box system is set up to provide students with practice time on specific skills in an independent way.
Place two of the same symbols on the end of the box. One symbol is velcroed on the box and can be removed to be placed on a student’s individual schedule. The student is asked to get the box with the matching label and return to their desk. OATECA recommends placing symbol-adapted directions for the task inside the box so that the student understands the expectations they are to perform while completing the task. |
